I love backlighting

If you haven't noticed yet, I love to back light. I just think back lighting just adds so much to an image. In this shot, but putting the sun between the bride and groom I added some interest to the kiss. By metering off of the face and stopping down a half stop, I was able to get the background exposure in and still have detail in the two of them.

If I would have metered off of the face, the background would have been blown out. If I would have metered off the whole scene, I would have had a silhouette. So in situations like this, meter off the face and then stop down a half stop.

Use what you have

I teach this all the time in my fashion class. You need to try and use the lighting that is available to you. Todays digital cameras are amazing with their white balance. Use the technology to try different lighting sources.

In this shot, the only lighting was the energy saving light bulb above her. It made it a bit green/yellow, but in a good way.

I think the lighting makes it fit with the feeling we were going for which was late 50's or early 60's.

The next time you think you need expensive lighting to do amazing shots, think again. Use what is available to you and you might just surprise yourself!
